Sounds, dynamic lighting and some match-three action!
- from Shovel Knight (Yacht Club Games, 2013 - PC, possibly Wii U, 3DS - Est. price, $10)
“Forsooth!” proclaimeth the Shovel Knight, “for my arms are sturdy and my trowel true! Wherefore must I withdraw my digging for this, how you say, ‘inspiration?”
And so proclaimeth his masters at Yacht Club Games, “We can just stop at the entire NES Capcom catalogue, good sir.”
One can see glimpses in the game’s trailer of nearly everything made of Capcom during their 8-bit heyday. There’s a bit of DuckTales in there, some of the radial boss progression that Mega Man made famous, a little tile-chucking like the kind one used to make Chip & Dale do until their little Rescue Ranging paws got sore. Considering this gushing reverence to these trademark tropes of gaming’s past, one shouldn’t be surprised that the crew of Yacht Club Games have also been responsible in part for such retro-infused fare as Contra 4 and A Boy and His Blob while during their previous time at WayFoward.
I’m loving pixel-art at the minute
I think I should try and get some dynamic lighting effects like this mockup.
Minecraft C=64 (old)
But remember to say the words correctly …
